Luke’s gospel has more meal time stories than any
of the other gospels. Some people say the Christian life
is like a journey but for Luke it looks more like a
party.
In today’s bible reading Jesus warns about taking
the most important place when invited to go to a social
event. But this is more than helpful advice for the
proper etiquette at the meal
table.
Jesus is saying that if those who are reasonably
wealthy and educated and confident try to push
themselves forward to get God’s attention, and make a
big impression, they will actually miss
out.
Far better to help those who have little in terms
of wealth or understanding or social skills. By going
out of your way to help them, you will begin to make our
world a better
place.
